Music and Design: Creativity Outcomes through Music Impact

Abstract

Both Gestalt theory (Koffka, 1935; Kohler, 1929) and Gibson’s theory of affordances (Gibson 1966, 1979) can be applied to explain how music is psychologically perceived and to investigate how music influences in educational environment and design outcomes. The purpose of this study is to assess the role of music on design outcomes and students’ attitude and behavior during drawing at educational environment. How traditional music psychologically influence students attitudes and behavior, indirectly, on design creativity. This study was conducted to evaluate the interaction and behavioral responses of students to the educational environment along with the creativity in design’ outcomes, based on the relationship between music and design. In this Study, subjects (60 senior students, 30 female, 30 male) from department of design at Yarmouk University divided to three groups and were asked to join in this study. Observations took place with written notes about behavior and attitude of students’ three groups during drawing for the three different sessions. Transactions and evaluations took place on design outcomes from the three groups with comparing students’ attitude and behavior through creativity and innovation of quality of design.
