Structure and Serendipity: Gifting, Ownership, Value and Failures in Socially Engaged Art

Abstract

TAPs methodology and approaches have informed Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme as well as research into community led regeneration outcomes with Manchester Metropolitan University. Our paper will focus on structures that are often put in place when placemaking projects are initiated external to the community they support and how, within the constraints of the constructs or indeed as a direct reaction to the constructs, serendipitous results and conversations around gifting, ownership, aesthetics, value, success, failure and legacy can come about. In the constructs that are placed upon the artists, commissioners, curators and communities, we can uncover ways of working that subvert the overarching constructs to dig deep and work towards more open, perhaps meaningful, ways of collaborating to place make.
