Un/Doing of Gender within the Moroccan Youth Subcultures

Abstract

Very little has been written on gender dynamics, attitudes and the role of girls in artistic subcultures. Surely, they have not been absent, but made absent from the very beginning of the sociological, anthropological and the journalistic inquiries about the Moroccan youth subcultures that have always been considered masculine par excellence. Using the postmodern feminist approach, the present paper studies the gender dynamics by spotlighting the doing and undoing of gender within the Moroccan gothic subculture. It also engenders the journey of young femininities and masculinities in their respective grooves to fully understand the social change that is taking place in the contemporary Morocco.
