Dr. Martin is a Professor and Coordinator of the urban based school counseling graduate program at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. He graduated with his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in Counselor Education. This program has been consistently nationally ranked in the top five doctoral counseling training programs for the last several decades. In 1999, Dr. Martin was awarded the outstanding alumni award from the Counselor Education Department at UNT for his contributions to the field. Dr. Martin has published over 60 referred journal articles and 6 books including his most recent children’s book about childhood depression. He has presented and guest lectured in over 20 nations and has received funding for over 3 million dollars in grants during his career.
As chairperson of the Counseling Department at Youngstown State University, this program received the Robert Frank Award in 2003 as the outstanding counseling graduate program in the nation. He has received the outstanding faculty research award from both Western Illinois University and Youngstown State University and is a fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association. Dr. Martin received post doctoral training in the UNT health sciences center in neuropsychology and learning processes. He is licensed as a clinical counselor and psychologist in the state of Ohio. He has devoted nearly 30 years of his research efforts to increasing academic success for at risk urban youth.
