Acetaminophen Use for Febrile Illnesses

In the past, healthcare providers have noticed a potential association between the use of acetaminophen in adolescents and increased asthma related complications. If this was true, children were asthma should avoid acetaminophen, a common additive in many medications that can be purchased over the counter or prescribed. Since children often get sick, this is a relevant drug interaction to investigate. This recent randomized trial used 300 children with mild persistenet asthma over a 48 week period. This study found no association between the use of acetaminophen compared to ibuprophen related to increased asthma complications. One specific metric was the use of a rescue inhailer in the two groups. No difference was found in the frequency of use of their inhailers. This study could help alleviate concerns using acetaminophen in adolescents with asthma. Acetominophen does not cause increased complications of existing astha. However, the link between using acetaminophen and developing novel asthma should still be investigated further.
