I am the Stocker Professor of Communication Studies at Ohio University. I teach courses in communication theory, dialogue and experience, interpretive and ethnographic inquiry, communication and narrative, embodied, ethical, and aesthetic perspectives on interpersonal communication, and communication in friendships across the life course. I have published extensively about the unique challenges and dialectical tensions of communicating in friendships, including two books, Friendship Matters: Communication, Dialectics, and the Life Course (1992), and The Compass of Friendship: Narratives, Identities, and Dialogues (2009). I continue to study how humane communicative practices and communicating as friends facilitates the well-lived life for persons and societies.
