A Graduate Assistant at The George Washington University's School of Public Health Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Melissa is a Master of Public Health Candidate in Physical Activity in Public Health. She is currently researching sports' contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the evidence-based aspects of fun that keep youth retained in sport. She teaches group exercise and exercise physiology while coaching as a Certified USA Triathlon Coach and USA Masters Swimming Coach. A 2013 Ironman All World-Athlete, Melissa is the co-author of "Sweet MAPS: Conceptualization of Low-Calorie Sweetener Consumption Among Young Adults" and "Evaluation of Sport-Based HIV Prevention Program." She also authored "Sport as a Tool For Refugee Empowerment." She was an accepted speaker on physical activity and the Sustainable Development Goals at the 2018 US Agency For International Development's Global Health Mini University and an invited speaker to the 2015 1st Boston Sport & Peace Roundtable, hosted by the Foundation for Sport and Development and Peace in which she presented "Key Aspects of Successful Global Sport for Development Initiatives." She also was an invited speaker to the 2015 Georgetown University's OWN IT Women's Leadership Summit speaking on "Global Women's Rights & Sport." She has volunteered in sport for development globally with Girls Gotta Run Foundation in Bekoji, Ethiopia as a Monitoring and Evaluation intern, with Lighthouse Relief focusing on refugee empowerment through sport in Greece, and in a community development capacity in Togo. She is also the founder of Letters to Future Sisters of the World, an online platform for women and girls to share their experiences of being a female in this world while sharing our dreams for future generations of women and girls. She is a competitive cyclist and competes for women's full inclusion in the Tour de France. She speaks on Sport and the Sustainable Development and has been featured on Sports Integrity Global Alliance and the Women in Sports Podcast.
