  Hannes Dufek is an Austrian composer and improviser. Born in Vienna in 1984, he received piano lessons from an early age on, later briefly studied counterpoint privately with an acquaintance of his father's. After graduating from high-school (Matura, 2003), he ventured to study both philosophy and composition (with Chaya Czernowin and Michael Obst) in Vienna (at the University for Music and Performing Arts, Vienna/MDW), finishing the latter in 2012. In 2006, he co-founded Platypus, an initiative for young and emerging composers, which in 2009 turned into Ensemble Platypus, a specialist group for new and contemporary music based in Vienna (www.platypus.or.at). Hannes Dufek has from its very beginning up until this day been the group's chairman and main organiser. In 2014, he was admitted as a doctoral student at the University for the Arts in Graz (KUG) under the supervision of Christa Brüstle (KUG), Annegret Huber (MDW), Clemens Gadenstätter (KUG) and Manos Tsangaris (HfM Dresden), working on the subject of "Utopian potential in current music-making". His composing, accordingly, is closely related finding and implementing formulations and instantiations of tangible, palpable Utopias mediated and presented through, within and by way of music and art. His compositions, most notably his work for theatre productions, have received wide critical and public acclaim. He is the grateful recipient of several grants, prizes, stipends and other recognitions of his work. From 2011-2017 he was an active member of the theatre production group makemake produktionen (www.makemake.at). Some of his compositions are published by Verlag Neue Musik, Berlin. Currently enrolled as a doctoral student at the KUG.
