Introduction

Overview:

  • Stars
  • Planets
  • The Beyond

Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify componets of Stars and Planets along with being able to create a porfolio highlighting what they have learned.

Target audience: 3rd grade Earth, Space, Science class

Duration: 2 weeks

Week 1 Breakdown: 

  • 2 topics
  • 4 activities (adds up to final project portfolio)
  • 1 Group Project (due following week)

Week 2 Breakdown:

  • 1 topic
  • 2 activites
  • Final presentations
  • Reflection

Activity 1: Google Classroom

Students will post during both weeks to the google classroom following the teacher promts given

Activity 2: Draw the night sky/Group activity

Draw the Night Sky

For Teacher

  • Teacher will facilitate exploration of various constelations and print pictures of them for class
  • They will be given 10-15 mins to complete this activity
  • Teacher will afterwards collect all drawings and creat a Star Map
  • Teacher will make copies of the drawings for individual student porfolio
Post Student Content to a Community

For Students

 

  • Students will be given materials to draw a constellation of their choice
  • Students will have about 10-15 mins to complete
  • Students will be given multiple photo constelations to choose from
  • Stduents will work to put constellations together to creat the Night sky with teacher

Activity 3: No place like home? Planet exploration

Google Cardbard explore!

For Teacher

Teacher will put students into groups of 4

  • Each group will be given a google carbard glasses, Phone (for the glasses), observation sheet, and timer
  • This activity will be about 20 to 25 mins for observation 5 to 7 mins to finish up worksheet
  • After activity Teacher will bring class back together and discuss what students explored.
  • Each group will have copied materials from activity for individual porfolio

Teacher Prompts:

What planet did you overserve?

whats are some differences between the planets you observed?

what are the charactericteristics of the planet you observed (pulled from observation worksheet)?

Post Student Content to a Community

For Student

  • Students will get into groups of 4
  • They will be in charge of delgating roles
  • There will be 4 roles divided into the group

Roles:

Planet explorer (one with glasses)

Time keeper/note taker

Person in charge of observation

Spokesperson for group during class discussion

  • Students will be given random planets to observe.

For Teacher

Multimodal presentation

Students will come up with a creative way to present their presentation on either a particular Star type or planetary body

Teacher will provide running list of ways students can presnt their information.

The presentations will be no 5-10 mins

Students will communicate their topic choice on google classroom

For Student

  • Students will get into pairs
  • They will choose either a star type or planet for the topic of their presentation
  • Students will confirm topic choice through google classroom.
  • Students will choose which medium to represent their topic from (or consult with Teacher if option is not listed)

Activity 4: Astro-scavenger hunt

For Teacher

  • Teacher will provide materials for students to look for throughout the class.
  • There will be stations set up for students to sort objects found into 
  • Teacher will provide a scavengerhunt guide for groups to go by
  • Activity should last 25-30 mins.
  • This activity will serve as a segway into the topic of beyond planets and stars

For Student

  • Students will get into groups of 2-3
  • They will have a guid sheet for the items
  • They will have to find various objects through the classroom that correlate to the clues in the guide sheet, then place the objects at the appropriate stations

This section will focus more on wrapping up toics from the planets and stars section.

Activity 5: Google classroom

For Teacher

Teacher will facilitate questions about galaxies and other astrological bodies in the Universe

Teacher Prompts: 

Besides planets and stars what else do you think is out there?

Do you think there are galaxies that are like ours?
