As Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Reaching & Teaching the Whole Child, Nancy Lourié Markowitz, Ph.D. oversees development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative efforts to enhance social and emotional learning across the teacher professional development continuum. She works with numerous partner organizations (including public and private universities, public policy groups, and a school district) to ensure that CRTWC's work is also culturally responsive and academically effective. She is Professor Emerita of Education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Jose State University (SJSU). Dr. Markowitz has worked as a public elementary school teacher in a Los Angles urban school, a private K-8 school administrator, and a teacher educator at large urban universities. Her professional background has focused on the study and implementation of change in teacher education. Examples of her efforts to bring organizational change to teacher preparation programs include: founding and serving as Director of the Triple "L" Collaborative (an Annenberg-funded Bay Area School Collaborative university-district partnership) and founding and serving as Coordinator of the SJSU Multiple Subject Credential Program option known as the Teacher Education Collaborative Partial Intern Program. Dr. Markowitz was also a Carnegie Scholar for the Advancement of Teaching, where her research focused on changing teacher educator practices through the development, implementation, and study of a university teacher educator inquiry program at SJSU. She has taught teacher preparation courses on creating effective learning envrionments in diverse, multicultural, urban K-8 classrooms, and social studies methods as well as served as a field supervisor. Dr. Markowitz' scholarly interests include the study of university/district collaboration, promoting change in teacher preparation programs, and inquiry into practices that promote effective learning environments. She is currently working on a book about CRTWC's work for Harvard Education Press.
