Carmen is the Executive Director and Founder of SQx Dance Company (sqxdance.org), a registered Canadian Charity whose work targets remote, rural, at-risk, underrepresetned populations. The mission of SQx is to use contemporary dance to promote kinship, collaboration, and teamwork. Carmen graduated from Mount Allison University (BA Hons English) in 2008 and London Contemporary Dance School (BA Hons Contemporary Dance) in 2011. In 2017, she was the recipient of the British Columbia Social Innovation Youth Award and Shaw Canada's 150 Award. Carmen was a panel presenter at the 2018 Emily Carr 13th International Conference in The Arts in Society: "Using Choreology to Increase Arts and Culture Engagement in Multi-Barriered Populations." She was also a panel presenter at TransCultural Exchange's 2018 International Conference in "Artists as Agents of Change" as well as a panel presenter in the 2017 Surrey Social Innovation Summit in "Youth Leading for Change: Ideas and Approaches from a New Generation." In 2019, she will be presenting "Blended Value: Art as Social Enterprise" at The European Conference on Arts and Humanities." Carmen's work has been presented in Canada, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Norway, and Iceland. Despite being professional dancer, last year Carmen was diagnosed with congential heart disease (a 3 CM whole in her heart called an atrial septal defect).
