I am the programme leader for the MA in Interior Architecture and Design at the Lincoln School of Design. My master's dissertation, titled "Interior design as architecture's 'Other'", investigated interior design as a discipline and defined it as a profession. I developed a professional framework and proposed four registration categories for interior design in South Africa. My current research, expressed in completed doctoral studies investigates the imaginal interior and the role of meaning in the interior artefact. My thesis is titled "An imaginal interpretation of interior design's methods of cultural production: Towards a strategy for constructing meaning". The thesis specifically investigates interior design's contribution to the cultural system by analysing iconic representations of interior design artefacts. I served as a member of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), Design Frontiers: Interiors Entity (DFIE) international scientific committee (2011); as a director of the South African Institute for the Interior Design Professions (iid), and chaired its Education Committee; I was also a member of the IFI Executive Board (2014-15).
