  Mark Chatarpal grew up in Guyana. He began his tertiary studies at the University of Toronto where he earned a B.A. (Hons) specializing in Caribbean Studies. He then received a scholarship and direct entry into the Ph.D. program at Indiana University's Department of Anthropology & IU Food Institute where he received an M.A. in Anthropology with a special emphasis on Food Studies. Mr. Chatarpal is currently an Associate Instructor and a Ph.D. Candidate specializing in Food Studies and Economic Anthropology. Throughout his academic career Mr. Chatarpal has received several awards including the Frederick I. Case Book Prize for scholarly excellence in Caribbean Studies from the University of Toronto. Canada's, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship and recently received IU's Harold K. Schneider Prize for best paper in Economic Anthropology. He is currently conducting research on the political economy of Cassava growth and the global starch trade in Guyana and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
