The Graduate-Mentor Project in Visual Arts Education. The research culminated in the development of an innovative Reciprocal-Mentoring Artist in Residence (AiR) Program. The program now annually places 25-30 specialist artists in Perth primary schools leading to collaborative special arts projects that would otherwise be beyond the resources available in the participating schools. In 2016 the program expanded to become a cross institutional program (ECU-Curtin Universities). The AiRs are now drawn from the Bachelor of Education (Arts), Master of Teaching (Arts) or the Bachelor Fine Arts programs at Curtin University. The placements encompass visual arts, media arts and drama residencies which are designed to be flexible and are negotiated between the host teacher and the AiR. They differ from other practicum placements the student-artists complete because they are framed around inclusion through the arts and do not encompass the usual obligations of practicum fieldwork. Each AiR mentors the generalist primary teacher to whom they have been assigned in the skills of their specialist discipline (eg painting or photography) and reciprocally the host mentors the AiR in inclusive education practice. Over 200 AiR placements have been completed since the program began in 2007. The program is expanding from year to year with remote/rural placements added to the schools list in 2017. Further arts outreach to remote/rural schools is envisaged for 2018/19.
