I am an Instructor of Social Sciences at the University of the Virgin Islands. Prior to working at the University, I held several jobs that worked with youth in the Virgin Islands. Much of my professional experience entailed working with youth who had behavioral, academic, and emotional issues. In August 2015, I started my career as an Instructor at the University with a focus on collaborative learning. Even though I am still passionate about collaborative learning, my research interests have expanded to include awareness of climate change and environmental awareness. I am currently a Co-Principal Investigator of the Perceptions and Awareness of Climate Change and Environmental Stewardship (PACCES) research study. PACCES is a grant-funded research study that aims to explore the relationship between awareness of climate change and environmental stewardship of persons on the island of St. Croix. Conducting this research inspired me to want to do more for my community and it fostered within me a much greater appreciation for this field. So much in fact, that I (along with the other two members of the PACCES Research Team) recently submitted a grant application which, if approved, will fund the creation of an academy that teaches junior high school students about the importance of climate change and environmental stewardship. The academy will also teach students research skills through the implementation of a littering group project. It is the hope of the entire research team, that the academy will spark a sense of pride in the students for their environment, in addition to inspiring them to pursue careers in the environmental fields. As the Principal Investigator of this prospective project, I am very invested in the success and sustainability of the academy.
