  I am a Professor of British History at California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, where I have taught since 2000. I am the author of two monographs: The Great Exhibition of 1851 (Yale University Press, 1999) and Imperial Boredom: Monotony and the British Empire (Oxford University Press, 2018), and an editor/contributor to several others including the Oxford History of the British Empire, for which I wrote the essay on "Art and Empire." I have also developed an interest in World History: I was the founding world history editor for History Compass, and e-journal for history, and coordinated a world history speaker series funded by the National Endowmen for the Humanities. I have served as an occasionaly consultant for the History Channel and the BBC.
