I have been a professor of sociology at Santa Clara University since 1982. I have served as Director of the following university units: Ethnic Studies; Women's Studies and Latin American Studies. My researsch has focused on Mexicans, particularly Mexican American women in the United States, immigration, children of immigrants and popular culture and women of color. I teach courses on immigrant communities, immigrant businesses, women's social protest movements, qualitative research, and race, class and gender. I have held national offices in professional organiziations and have served on the editorial board of serveral academic journals. My publications include:North From Mexico (2016-updated contribution), Ethnic Community Builders in San Jose, (2007) (winner of Oral History Association's Award for Best Oral History Project); Narratives of the Second Generation Mexican American Women (2014); Contested Images: Women of Color and Popular Culture (2012) (winner of National Popular Culture Association Prize for best anthology); The Mexican Americans (2002); Chicana Feminist Thought (1998). My article, "Chicana Feminist Discourse, 1970-1990) appeared in the top teir academic journal , Gender & Society (1989) and has been reprinted in fourteen anthologies. A version of this article also appeared in FEM. I have presented papers at national and international academic conferences. I have been a guest speaker at many universities including Yale University, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford and others. I have been active in the civic life of Santa Clara University, the city of Santa Clara and Santa Clara County.
