Update 2: Whats New about New Learning?- "A Whole World of Knowledge..."

In, Assessment and Pedagogy in the Era of Machine-Mediated Learning, Dr. Bill Cope and Dr. Mary Kalantzis explain that anyones learning sequences can be, "progressively expand one's capacity for doing and knowing (Gee, 2003). Further stating, "A whole world of knowledge- a real and highly varied world of knoweldge rather than the univocal synthesis of knowledge by the textbook writer- is a hyperlink away" (358). This sentence really says it all. I mean to imagine anything you want to look up the answer is at your finger tips and a computer. As a math student in algebra, I had a very difficult time cultivating the leraning process of mathmatics and the use of You-Tube for problem solving was very useful, in fact I would not have succeeded in algebra if it was not for the hyperlinks to problem solving.

These simple add ons to what new learning is and the advantage that internet systems bring us. Any subject we can get update information on, including any history information that we may be looking for. We use to sit with encylodedia's and now we can just "Google" something. The new learning spectrum gives us more time to read and reflect for personal growth. How many times have you been looking up a topic and find something interesting and begin reading. let say about another country, Stonehenge, or even the history of Mt. St. Helens and the erruption of 2008? With new learning we can get out of the four wall classrooms and expand even into different countries. We meet up with others all around the globe at the same time and can face time that person. Pretty incredible! In another class I learned about Japan students sharing a virtual glass wall, where they could study under the sea and the creatures as if they wree under water themselves.

Looking forward to the many possabilities to bring to the classroom, now just to grapple with becoming tech savy and with the help of the internet I will be able to implement new ways of new learning in my classrooms.
