  I am an Associate Professor of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in NYC. When I came to New York I started working as a drug researcher at NDRI (National Development and Research Institutes), and I worked there for 12 years until I came to John Jay College in 1993. My dissertation was about methadone and crime. I participated in and then directed a number of studies about the relationship between drugs and violence, especially homicide. I've also studied the connection between drugs and gambling. Most of my work has focused on heroin in NYC. I am the author of two books about heroin use in the entertainment world: Heroin and Music in New York City (Palgrave Macmillan 2014) and Heroin, Acting, and Comedy in New York City (Palgrave Macmillan 2017).
