Irish Potato Quality and Safety for Farmers' Improved Income Generation and Sustainable Market Supply Chain with Potato Industry in Rwanda

The project aimed at strenghtening business partnership between smallholder potato farmers and potato processing companies in Rwanda. The main problem, before intervention, was the rejection of smallholder potato farmers' fresh potato tubers at the reception with the negative impact of raw materials shortage on the potato processor side. The project was implemented during three years, between 2018-2021.

Smallholder potato farmers were capacity-built in quality potato production with impact of meeting potato-raw materials quality standard, as specified by potato crisps processor. Moreover, potato crisps processor was capacity-bult in potato crisps safety processing with impact of meeting market requirements along with the consumer protection, through implementation of HACCP system.

As an important sustainable outcome, about 70% of potato smallholder farmers, who were involved in the project implemetation, were accept to supply and they are still supplying their fresh produce to the processing company, and the problem of raw material shortage was sorted out on the processing company side. In an addition, the next step for the processing company is to proceed for HACCP certification.
