Spending many years in academia as a student and as a researcher, I primarily focussed on measuring and analyzing human society-environment interactions and communicate its state, trends and issues of interests to resource users, managers and policy makers. I sought to provide detailed qualitative insights and quantitative empirical representation of stakeholder attributes relevant to specific human-environmental issues to improve understanding and enable reliable policy making decisions. I tried to adopt an interdisciplinary perspective and integrate environmental sociology, political ecology, natural resource economics, and more recently social psychology to understand, inform and address knowledge gaps in the area of human dimensions of environmental and natural resource management, under diverse socio-ecological contexts. My doctoral research focused on the Western Ghats in India, and it made me aware of the dynamic and complex relationship that exists between the natural environment and human society, specific to the socio-ecological region, and its implications on sustainability. A desire to move from academic research to practice and research, and an opportunity to continue the engagement in understanding human-environment interactions and outcomes in the Western Ghats, brought me to Keystone Foundation, a non-governmental organization focusing on eco-development initiatives in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India. I have been with Keystone for nine months and I am currently heading the community well-being program.
