Tobias Sperlich is a cultural anthropologist working on issues of cultural representation through museum objects and displays. He received his D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in 2008 with work on material culture and photographs from colonial Samoa in German museums. Since 2005, he has been a faculty member at the University of Regina, where his research has branched from his doctoral work to also include the ways First Nations and settler Canadian histories and lived realities are displayed in small-town museums in Saskatchewan. His particular interest lies in the dissonances produced by the varying narratives attached to objects and displays by different types of audiences (First Nations vs. settler Canadians; locals vs. visitors; academics vs. general public; etc.).
