Tammy Evans, Associate Professor of Graphic Design Winston Salem State University, Department of Art + Visual Studies Winston-Salem, North Carolina. USA Education 1996 M.F.A., (Graphic Design) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 1992 B.F.A., (Graphic Design) Wayne State University, Detroit, MI Research Interests and Goals • Increase opportunities for multi-disciplinary research and collaboration • Facilitate community partnerships that educate and empower individuals/groups • Build relationships that foster economic development and stability, healthy lifestyles, and sustainable environments • Increase experiential-learning opportunities for students through research and service Research: My research interests include examination of the role of design in society to increase the quality of life. This agenda focuses on issues related to improved healthcare practices, environmental conditions and sustainability, education and empowerment through community engagement. Designers can provide leadership in communities for the implementation of design thinking and practice for social change through effective communication design, environmental design, and interdisciplinary models that work to serve the needs of the community and society at large. My research studies include typographic legibility studies for people over the age 65 with low vision (aging and environmental signage); the creation of art parks, arts programming, and community gardening in blighted areas (urban environmental/social issues); graphic and visual communications support of community serving organizations and institutions. Teaching: My course design promotes active learning and integrates critical thinking into the design process. Many assignments incorporate service-learning opportunities for students through the facilitation of design practicum projects in which students apply the theories and principles learned in the classroom. Students gain real-world experience with a greater understanding of the community and clients they serve and ways in which good design can have a positive impact on their environment.
