Stéphanie Smadja teaches Stylistics and French Linguistics, in the Department of Lettres, Art, Cinéma at the University Paris Diderot - Paris 7, since 2008. She is the Associate Director of the department since september 2011, and member of the governing council of the Humanities Institute of Paris, since may 2011. Since 2010, she is the manager of an Idex project Self-talk : situations, forms and practices. This project implies a reflexion on identity, subjectivity but also language and communication. Four main lines were defined : construction and deconstruction of self- representation ; link between monologue and dialogue ; link between monologue and humanity ; study of those who produce monologues, including madmen, seriously ill and homeless person. Since 2013, she is the co-manager of a project about Science and common language. Firmly interdisciplinary, this program explores the relations between science, public space and common language from the 19th century, when the divorce begun between science and literature, until today. These projects are an example (and an experiment) of possible realization for a humanities laboratory. Her research areas include prose (XIXth-XXth centuries), the twenties, monologue, adjectives in literature, syntactic discontinuity, and style.
