Dr. Sofia Aleixo is an architect, researcher in architectural heritage and architectural conservation, and a practitioner. Her Ph.D. (Oxford Brookes University, UK - 2016) focused on the significance of historic buildings and the evaluation of conservation impact on cultural values. She is an Assistant Professor (Évora University, Portugal - since 2002), where she teaches at the Design Studios and supervises MA dissertations of the Architecture Master. She was the Director of the Techincal Local Cabinet of Belver where the coordinated the work of a team with the purpose of developing the Local Development Plan for the historic Village of Belver (Gavião, Portugal - 1999-2001) She runs a practice with architect Victor Mestre since 1991 (later vmsa architects, 1997), where architecture and architecture conservation projects have been developed and implemented, further winning architecture awards (e.g. European Commission Award - Europa Nostra 2013, for the Conservation of Architectural Heritage).The office work has been published in national and international specialized publications (e.g. Loggia, Annual Architecture books, and monographs). It has also been invited to display its work in individual exhibitions (e.g. by the Order of the Portuguese Architects, Almada Municipality and Abrantes Municipality with exhibition catalogues), although it has also been displayed in exhibitions with other colleagues. Invited speaker at several professional and academic conferences to discuss the office's work, the professional challenges and the research topics that she and the office pursue, nationally and internationally (e.g. Germany, England, Spain, Mexico, etc.) Among other works, the office designed the Portuguese Pavillion at the World Exhibition 2005 (Aichi, Japan - 2005), the conservation of Liceu Passos Manuel (Lisbon, 2010), the restore of Carlos Relvas Photographic Studio (Golegã, 2004), the elderly center at Vale Formoso (Funchal, 2010), the restore and adaptation of Quinta Alegre (on-going), etc.
