...MoreMy work in public schools as a school counselor prior to becoming a tenure track faculty member constantly exposed me to racial conflict and the hierarchy prevalent in a nation whose history grew from roots steeped in conquest, colonization and slavery. Once I became a University Professor, after having worked at a tribal college, it was evident that even in the context of higher education where we are engaged in “discovery of the other” that we still are grounded in the shadow of our racialized origins as a nation. Coming from an indigenous heritage the call to healing of the wounds from this conflictive past has been paramount to my own spirit journey. The privilege of being able to liberate my students from the smog of racism by the introduction of a curriculum that prompts transformation is at the heart of my teaching.
