My research regarding the implications of Oriental representations started with my graduate paper for my BA in Art History when I discussed the work of Carol Popp de Szathmari. I continued my inquiry into this subject with a dissertation for a Master's degree in the Master Program Art History and Philosophy of Culture organized by the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest, and introduced the notion of cultural encounters between the East and the West in my analysis. After receiving my MA, I decided that I needed more research into the historical background of nineteenth century Romanian society. As a result, I was accepted in a PhD program at the Faculty of History with a thesis concerning the cultural history of Oriental representation in the mentalities and political implications of Romania’s modernizing process and its quest for political autonomy from the Ottoman Empire.
