Specializing in modern historical methods and theories, Sino-German relations and modern Chinese intellectual history, he has published over forty articles and reviews on related topics. He is the author of Transmitting the Ideal of Enlightenment: Chinese Universities since the Late Nineteenth Century (Lanham: University Press of America, 2009), Jindai shixue yu shixue fungfu (Modern historiography and historical methods) (Taipei: Wunan tushu, 2000) and The Future of the Non-Western World in the Social Sciences of Nineteenth Century England (Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang, 1998) and co-editor of China Reconstructs (Lanham: University Press of America, 2003).
