  Njål Ølnes (1965) is a Norwegian saxophone player, composer, researcher and experienced jazz teacher. Through the jazz band Decoy, Dingobats, BMX and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra he has been an important part of the famous Norwegian jazz scene during 25 years. In 2016 Ølnes completed and defended his doctoral thesis From Small Signs to Large Forms - Analyses of improvised interaction using aural sonology, at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. Currently he is working as post-doctoral fellow at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. He is conducting a research project at the jazz departement: Extension of The Collective Memory, studying methods of teaching in jazz ensembles. As an artist he is mainly working with the extended version of the band BMX: BmXL
