I am currently a Doctoral Student in the Psychology subprogram of Cognition, Brain, and Behavior at CUNY’s Graduate Center. My research focus since my years as an undergraduate have been in the area of aesthetic preference and evaluation of visual art and how those preferences vary as a function of expertise. I have always been interested in issues concerning variability in perceptions of reality and preferences and how they inform each other. I have a long history of studying aesthetics from a psychological perspective. As an undergraduate and Master’s student I worked on issues of how individual pictorial elements affect compositional balance and impact liking, how viewing reproductions of original artwork shifts evaluations compared to the originals, and the existence of hedonic contrast in the arts. As a Doctoral student I’ve worked on issues of expertise in the arts and the aesthetics of software code. This work provided the basis for my dissertation topic which focuses on using an existing model of verbal communication to help capture the variability in aesthetic preferences seen for art.. It is important to note that no one has attempted to provide a communicative model for aesthetic preferences in quite this way.
