Having obtained doctorate (1990) from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, I undertook post-doctoral research. Afterwards I joined JNU as an assistant professor. Presently, I am a professor of Urdu with deep interest in the arts, literature and intellectuals of colonial India. These are the themes of my enduring interest. I have been engaged in them for more than two decades. I hope to publish my researches in the form of two books in coming years. Some of my publications include (i) "The Indian Sense of Bliss: the Upaniśadic Ānanda" in Robert Wilkinson (ed.), New Essays in Comparative Aesthetics, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Newcastle, UK, 2007, (ii) "Conceptualising Ideal Muslim Women: the Reformers of the Aligarh Movement" in Sabyasachi Bhattacharya (ed.), Development of Modern Indian Thought and the Social Sciences, Oxford University Press, New Delhi, 2007, (iii) "Funerary Practices, Paradise Symbolism and Islamic Art and Architecture" (co-authored with Archana Verma) in Harsha V. Dehejia (ed.), Gods beyond Temples, Motilal Banarsidass, New Delhi, 2006,The Pursuit of Comparative Aesthetics (edited with Robert Wilkinson)(Ashgate 2006)and The Partition of India: Literary Responses (edited with S R Chakravarty)(New Delhi 1988).
