Laurette Morris is Associate Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury. She teaches courses in clinical, developmental and health psychology, and has presented and published research in the area of stress and coping. Her service to the College has included serving as research mentor for students from "underrepresented" backgrounds in the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), as faculty advisor to the Psychology Club and Psi Chi and as Director of the College's Women's Center. Her pedagogical approach utilizes empiricism and community engagement through individual, group, and class projects, as a major vehicle for students' learning. Her classroom style promotes interactions, discussion, or problem-focused group-work to enhance traditional lecture presentations. More recently, Dr. Morris has taken on the challenge of developing students' understanding of social justice and its applications to professional psychology. Even Old Westbury students, who face considerable stressors in their daily lives because they are from lower SES and culturally-diverse/immigrant backgrounds, are unaware of a more formal social justice perspective and how they might apply such a perspective to their life experiences, future goals and professional activities. Dr. Morris also remains a strong proponent of curricular assessment.
