Dr Katherine Albertson is an applied criminologist and has conducted fieldwork in over 30 different prisons, including women's and high security establishments and with offenders on license in the community. Kathy has a broad range of experience of conducting research in the wider criminal justice area, in particular including the evaluation of offender engagement with cultural, creative-arts-based activities theme.
Katherine has been involved in a consultation exercise focussing on tackling health inequalities through developing evidence-based policy and practice with childbearing women in prison, in partnership with the University of York. She also had project management responsibility for a project in partnership with Action for Prisoners Families, focussing on mapping the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care and support services for women and their babies in prison and on release.
Having focussed on conducting interviews with a service user-as-expert approach, Katherine has been in a position to disseminate the ‘offender voice’ with regard to what they themselves see as being the significant drivers of agency in their lives. An area of research and theoretical interest is the impact of engagement with cultural, arts-based activities for offenders on their desistance (from criminal lifestyles) trajectories.
