I am currently Knapp Chair in Humanities at the University of San Deigo (visiting) and Professor of History at the University of Dayton(tenured). I received my Ph.D. in the History of Science from the Johns Hopkins University in 1983 and have been at the Universitgy of Dayton since 1984. My most recent book, The Automobile and American Life, earned the Ray and Pat Browne best reference work award in 2010 by the Popular Culture Association. My next book, Stealing Cars: From the Model T to Today, is under consideration by Johns Hopkins University Press. This proposed essay was the Knapp Lecture at the University of San Deigo, presented on April 5, 2011.
