  Sociologist by training with a PhD realized in the Colegio de Mexico and UC Berkeley (1982-85) on the integration of rural migrants in the city of Toluca, Mexico, J-C Bolay worked first for the Swiss agency of cooperation for development, involved in a public institution in Duala, Cameroon, in charge of the upgrading of the largest slum in the country (1986-89). Therefore he was contracted by EPFL as senior urban researcher and teacher, then director of the international cooperation and titular professor. His main domain of research are focused on Southern cities, with priorities for urban environment, social participation, slum upgrading, urban governance, urban planning, international cooperation and sustainable development. He produced more than 70 articles and chapters of books. He is since 2007 director of the UNESCO chair in technologies for development. Along his career in EPFL he guided the research in cooperation towards an interdisciplinary approach of the problems and a transdisciplinary resolution of them. At the side of these academic activities he also developed activities of consultancy at national and international levels.
