Dr Jim Smith has 42 years of social work administrative, clinical practice and university teaching experience. His social work career began in 1977 with the American National Red Cross as a Caseworker in Service to Military Families and Veteran. He began his active duty career in 1978 as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corp as a Social Work Officer. After 15 years he left with an Honorable Discharge in 1993 to pursue his Ph.D., contiuning his social work military career in the Army Reserves with the 1908th Medical (Combat Stress) Detachment in Topeka, KS. and later with the 1835th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress Component) in Denver, CO. Jim has a Bachelors of Arts Degree (1975), from Hampton University, Hampton VA, a Master of Social Work (1977) from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA; Master of Public Administration (1988) from the University of LaVerne, LaVerne, CA. His thesis was titled, "A Study Exploring Weather and Isolation as Work Stressors of Current Human Services Professional in Northern Alaska". His Ph.D. is in Family Life Education and Consultation (2000), from Kansas State University. His dissertation research was, "Emotional Intelligence and Behavior: An Exploratory Study of Individuals on Probation and Parole". While working on his Ph.D. Jim was an Adjunct Professor, teaching a clinical social work practice course at Wasburn University (1988) and working full time at Pawnee Mental Health Services, in Junction City as an Adult Psychotherapist. He has been Adjunt Faculty for social work classess at Kansas State University, University of Kansas, and University of Alaska - Fairbanks. In 1999 Jim accepted a tenure-tracked faculty position as Assistant Professor with the Division of Social Work, College of Health Sciences, at the University of Wyoming. For 9 years he taught undergraduate and graduate social work practice courses, while conducing an active research and scholarship program. He was also Adjunct Instructor in African-American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 2005, he was recommended and recieved tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. In 2008 Jim returned to Topeka for a tenure-tracked position at Washburn University in the Department of Social Work, as an Associate professor. In March 2011 he was recommended and recieved tenure and promotion to Full Professor. His research articles can be found in, Race, Gender, & Class; The Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics; Journal of Nursuring Scholarship; Criminal Justice Review; the International Journal of the Humanities, the International Journal of Learning; Forum on Public Policy: A Journal of the Oxford Round Table; the Society of Spirituality and Social Work Forum; and the International Journal of Diversity in Communities, Organizations, and Nations. He has presented his research in numerous national and international conferences at the University of Granada, Spain, Cambridge and Oxford Universities in Great Britain, the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; University of Barcelona, Spain, Queen's College, Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Australia.
