My background as a practicing artist and arts educator spans thirty years. My undergrad degree in Art Education was completed in 1980. I gained an MFA at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia in 1999 and for the last fifteen years I have been teaching on the Bachelor of Visual Arts at AUT University in Auckland, NZ. Currently I am the Curriculum Leader for Photography in Visual Arts and teach on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I started the Doc Ed in March 2010. My current research explores the site of the studio-based learning environment as a hot bed of difficulty and unrest whilst also acknowledging its ability to provide a freedom for the students to explore their potential creative identity. I have an interest in the diversity of the student cohort and in particular the rising numbers of students suffering mental illness and a collapse of confidence. The study aims to uncover the complexities facing art students entering university, in an uncertain and exponentially changing world.
