Helaine Ciporen is a child therapist and licensed clinical social worker in practice for more than 23 years. Ms. Ciporen counsels families coping with chronic illness at the Mount Sinai Hospital, Hall Family Center for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes and the Pediatric Pulmonary Center. In this capacity, she conducts parent groups and popular outreach educational events, in her effort to reverse the Type 2 Diabetes epidemic in children. She is co-investigator in the ROAD study, a multi-hospital research project, on combating obesity in children within the school setting, and is a clinical instructor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Her chapter “Fighting the New Epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes in Children” appears in the 4th edition of Social Work in Health Settings: Practice in Context, published by Routledge Press, 2010. The protocol she developed is currently utilized by Columbia University to train health care professionals. Ms Ciporen's presentation “Combating Type 2 Diabetes in Children”, won the Health Throughout the Life Span award at the International Changing Health Conference, Dublin Ireland, June, 2010.
