I am a saxophonist and theorist, originally from Berlin/Germany.
In 2006 I was awarded a PhD from the University of Edinburgh for my research into performance and theories of embodiment. I have since written for many international journals, including Leonardo, Organised Sound, Performance Research, Cambridge Publishing and Routledge. I have published a book on performance and the threshold, an edited volume on user-generated content and recently a volume on improvisation, both for Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
I have performed with many international musicians including Joan La Barbara, Pauline Oliveros, Stelarc, the Avatar Orchestra, Carin Levine, Chris Brown, Tom Arthurs and Evan Parker. I published several CDs on the creative source label, a recording on the SLAM label with a semi-autonomous technological artifact, guitarist Han-earl Park and saxophonist Bruce Coates, and recently released a recording on ‘Buster and Friends’ (digital download).
I was the Program Chair for the 2010 DRHA conference in Brunel and the Artistic Director of the 2012 Sonorities Festival. I have recently returned from Brazil where I worked on a 6 months HEA Sir Ron Cooke International Fellowship carrying out ethnographic work on improvisation in Brazil.
I have been an AHRC and a RCUK Research Fellow at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast and am now a Lecturer at the School of Creative Arts, Belfast, where I coach 3rd year recitalists and MA performance students in improvisation, performance and critical theory: www.sarc.qub.ac.uk/~fschroeder
