Evan Radford is currently a Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies, Campion College, at the University of Regina. He currently lectures on topics related to Jewish religion and history.
In April, 2011 he completed his M.A. in Humanities through York University. Throughout his M.A. program, Evan focused on two areas of research. The first area was religious Zionist discourse in interwar America. His primary concern here was analyzing how two prominent Zionists, Abba Hillel Silver and Mordecai Kaplan, linked their definitions of the Jewish nation with their definitions of religion so to create an American-Jewish identity for interwar Jews in America to live by. The second area of research pertained to coming out ceremonies performed by LGBTQ-identified Jews. His primary focus here was to examine and gauge how and with which theories these ceremonies can be analyzed and treated as rituals. Furthermore, he concluded that through their performances of these ceremonies, LGBTQ-identified Jews deconstruct and reconstruct historical, heterosexist gender norms and roles of Judaism.
Evan's current research interests include: coming out ceremonies in Judaism; theory and method in the study of religion; first- and second-order definitions of Judaism and/or Jewish communities; Zionist discourses prior to 1948; and gender theory. Evan plans to continue his studies by pursuing a PhD in religious studies.
