Dr. Johnson, working at the Landmark since 1972, has developed and implemented both the interdisciplinary research program and an array of public programs associated with the Landmark. She has published widely on the research and interpretation of the site, received numerous grants for both research and public programs, and given innumerable public talks across the region on the Landmark’s research and public programs. The Landmark’s regional research program, while focusing on the Southern High Plains, stretches throughout the grasslands of the Americas, currently including her research in the Northeastern prairie, Valley of Mexico, and the pampas of Argentina. In 1999, she received an appointment to the Texas Historical Commission as a Commissioner (1999-2007), one of 17 board members governing the state agency for historic preservation with a variety of programs to preserve archaeological, historical, and cultural resources of Texas. In 2007, she was designated a Paul Whitfield Horn Professor by the Board of Regents, the highest academic honor bestowed by Texas Tech University for faculty. Active in various museum and research-discipline professional organizations, she currently is on the Editorial Board of the peer-reviewed journals Quaternary International and PaleoAmerica.
