I'm a Professor in Women's and Gender Studies at Saint Mary's College of CA, where I also direct the program. My scholarly research and teaching focus on feminist theories and popular culture, including theories of historical masculinity, cultural nostalgia and representations of feminism. My essays, "Masculinity and Its Discontents: Myth, Memory and the Future on Mad Men," in Mad Men and Politics: Nostalgia and the Remaking of Modern America (ed. Linda Beail and Lilly J. Goren) and "My Mannequin, Myself: Embodiment in Fashion's Mirror, in Fashion Talks: Undressing the Power of Style (eds. Shira Tarrant and Marjorie Jolles) unite my scholarly research with interests in pedagogical theory. I've presented my research on fashion theory, popular narrative in fiction, film and television and consumerism at numerous conferences in cultural studies, women's studies and film history. My recent work focuses on representations of feminism and female rage in the #MeToo movements, social media and in TV series like Jessica Jones, Orphan Black, Westworld and Dietland. I'm currently working on a book project addressing those themes and others related to grief, nostalgia and cultural memory in contemporary representations of feminism in pop culture.
