I have worked in the clinical field as a social worker for over 20 years. I have worked in the field of oncology, grief counselling,trauma counselling and debriefing. I completed a doctoral dissertation which dealt specifically with compassion fatigue and burnout in rehabilitation professionals and have published in the area of transformational rehabilitation, spirituality and social work and compassion fatigue. As Executive Director at my agency, I maintain an ongoing interest in the area of compassion fatigue as well as spiritual well-being and religion in both clients and colleagues. I believe that spirituality and religion have the potential to strengthen clinical relationships but that they also have the ability to act as blind spots when not actively reflected upon.
