I am Reader in History at the University of St Andrews, a specialist in early modern Scottish and British history with particular interest in intellectual and cultural history and the history of the book, and winner of the Frank Watson Prize for Scottish History (1994), the Library and Information History Prize (2003) and the Eliza Atkins Gleason Book Award of the American Library Association (2010). I am the author of more than 40 refereed articles and essays and of eight monographs books including, of particular relevance to this proposal, Commonplace Books and Reading in Georgian England (2010), Making British Culture: English Readers and the Scottish Enlightenment (2008) and A Nation of Readers: The Lending Library in Georgian England (2008).
