I am a broadly trained geographer with degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Minnesota. My research interests include environmental history, land-use change, resource management and trans-border conservation. Most of my work has been undertaken in the temperate forest of southern Chile and Argentina. I teach an introductory natural science course (Physical Geography) as well as an introductory social science course (Environmental Issues). My other courses include Geography of Latin America, Geographic Field Methods, Sports Geography, and Environmental Hazards. My training in geography has allowed me to appreciate "the big picture.” I have long been interested in synthesis and integration, and in using a broad range of research methods. My current research project is about the origin and geographic diffusion of protected areas (national parks and other types of reserves) in the southern Andes.
