Cynthia Cravens is assistant professor of English at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Her most recent papers, titled respectively, “From Fugitive Slave to Harlem Housewife: the Tragic Mulatto in American Literature,” and “Baccarat, Texas Hold ‘Em, and James Bond: the Geopolitics of High-Stakes Poker,” both analyze the use of popular tropes to sustain or critique ideological positions of power. Her current research projects examine the representations of writers in the popular imagination, and, relatedly, the necessity of the humanities in higher education.
