Strong Houses, Strong Voices is an arts-based, practice-led research project that uses co-created first-person video narratives to present the lived experiences of a group of post-natural builders currently constructing houses within South African informal settlements with the organisation Qala Phelang Tala/Start Living Green (QPT). The study resulted in eight video narratives co-created with QPT’s post-natural builders and an exhibition for the South African Vrystaat Arts Festival titled "The House in Freedom Square". This exhibition featured these video narratives accompanied by a suite of other artworks reflecting my experiences and analysis. A further outcome is the adaptation of two video narrative methods that extend upon the digital storytelling methodology. These methods are suited to individuals who, due to time, geography or technology, lack capacity for group work, have limited traditional literacy capabilities, or prefer to work through oral or visual communications. The research also proposes a model for community-based creative collaboration that can be used by other practitioners to support empowering community cultural development practice.
