Charles Durrett, noted architect and author of Senior Cohousing: A Community Approach to Independent Living, introduced the concept of senior cohousing to the U.S. from its success in Denmark.
Senior cohousing offers new architectural and social models of housing designed for older Americans seeking a balance of independence and sociability, community and privacy. Charles Durrett has designed over fifty cohousing communities in North America and has consulted on many more around the world.
Starting with 25 to 30 seniors, Charles co-designs a new senior “village” with the future residents themselves that serves their goals for an environment that truly meets their needs for aging successfully in place by creating a place where people grow to know each other, care about each other, and to support each other, as they grow older. In particular, together they design communities that make life more convenient, more affordable, healthier, and more fun and make it easier to live out the goal of living lighter on the planet.
His firm, McCamant and Durrett Architects, is known for its affordable and community-based senior cohousing communities intergenerational cohousing communities, as well as, mixed-use neighborhoods and neighborhood centers, town planning, and for its expertise in sustainability in the context of budget.
