Cat Normoyle is an Assistant Professor at Memphis College of Art in the graphic design program. Normoyle’s research and creative works explore the role of design within the context of environments—artistic interventions, civic-minded improvements, and other placemaking endeavors—particularly as it pertains to issues of social sustainability and social change. Notable works include “Recontextualizing Abandonment in Community,” which won AIGA Environmental Graphics Award and was published in The Overlapping of Popular and Contemporary Cultures Journal; “Make Memphis” and “Knowledge Quest Public Art Project” collaborations with 25 Square Public Art Initiative in Memphis, TN; and “Mapping Moments” a body of work about discovering place, inspired by a week long conference in Vinalhaven, ME with Design Inquiry. Originally from Boston, Normoyle has a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from Georgia State University. Prior to graduate school, Normoyle worked at the Atlanta-based marketing agency, Trend Influence. As a designer on the brand strategy and innovation team, she had the opportunity to work with fortune 500 companies like Coca-Cola, Toyota, International, IC Bus, Levi’s, Unilever, and Kimberly-Clark.
