I was born in India in 1938, but spent my childhood and received school education in colonial Kenya. I came to the UK in 1955 to pursue higher studies; and by 1962 I had gained an Honours degree in History from Manchester University and a Diploma in Education from Oxford. I worked as a school teacher in Kenya from 1962 to 1966 and in the UK from 1966 to 1984. Between 1984 and 1987 I was employed as a leader of a team to promote Multicultural Education in the schools of the Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester. From 1987 to 2003 I was working as Principal Lecturer in Multicultural Education at the Manchester Metropolitan University where I still work part-time. I also teach Indian History at the University. I have been involved in many educational initiatives in Multicultural Studies and have also worked as a consultant to Greater Manchester Police in previous years. I am the author of "India: The Ancient Past" (Routledge 2007), and I have been commissioned by Routledge to write a history of Muslim India (forthcoming 2012).
